Every character in that 17-digit string means something specific. Decode trim levels, plant codes, production sequences, and the things dealers won't volunteer.
Every vehicle sold in the US since 1981 has a VIN — a Vehicle Identification Number — that tells you exactly what it is, where it was built, when, and its place in the production sequence. Most people treat it as a serial number to hand to a mechanic or copy into Carfax. That's a waste. A VIN is a 17-character data record, and every position means something specific.
Let's decode one from scratch.
The VIN is divided into three sections:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in a VIN — too easy to confuse with 1, 0, and 0. If you see them, you've got a typo or a fraudulent VIN.

Positions 2–3 narrow it down to the specific manufacturer. The full WMI is assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Some common ones:

These five positions tell you what the vehicle actually is — but the encoding varies by manufacturer. There's no universal standard for positions 4–8; each manufacturer defines their own scheme. Generally:
Position 8 is the engine code. Manufacturers publish their engine code tables, and they tell you the displacement, configuration, and sometimes the specific tune. For example, on a 2005 Ford Mustang, position 8 of T means the 4.6L 3-valve V8 (GT). A V means the 5.4L supercharged V8 (Shelby GT500).
This is one of the cleverest parts of the VIN standard — and the part that catches fakes. Position 9 is a calculated check digit, computed from all the other 16 characters using a weighted formula specified by NHTSA. If you do the math and position 9 doesn't match the calculated value, the VIN is invalid — either a typo or a fraud attempt.
When someone stamps a stolen vehicle with a fake VIN from a legitimate car, the check digit calculation often catches it — unless the fraudster knows the algorithm. A VIN that fails the check digit test is a serious red flag on any used car purchase. Most VIN decoder websites automatically validate this.
One of the most useful single characters in the whole VIN. The model year code cycles through a standard alphabet (skipping I, O, Q, U, Z, and 0):

The cycle repeats every 30 years, which is why codes overlap (A = 1980 or 2010). The rest of the VIN — especially the production sequence — disambiguates which decade you're in if needed.
This character identifies the specific factory where the vehicle was assembled. Each manufacturer defines their own plant codes. For example, Ford uses F for Dearborn, Michigan; K for Kansas City, Missouri; E for Hermosillo, Mexico. Knowing the plant matters when researching production quality rumors or verifying a "US-built" claim.
The last six digits are a sequential production number — essentially the serial number within that plant's run for that model year. Low production numbers can matter for collectors (first off the line), and this sequence is what makes each VIN globally unique.

Armed with a VIN, you can learn things a dealer won't tell you unless you ask directly:
Run the VIN through: 1) NHTSA recalls check (free), 2) a VIN decoder for full specs, 3) Carfax or AutoCheck for history (paid, but worth it for anything over $5k). The check digit math is worth doing too — a VIN that fails the formula is a hard stop.
If the VIN on the dashboard doesn't match the door jamb, the title, or the engine stamp — leave immediately. Mismatched VINs are a signature of VIN cloning (a stolen vehicle given the identity of a legitimate one) or a rebuilt vehicle with replaced parts that weren't properly documented.
